Dallas Family (late-1890s)

Figure 1.--This cabinet portrait shows three children dressed up for a family portrait. Here is a detail showing the child in the dress. The children are not identified, but presumably are siblings about 4-11 years old. The two boys wear standard lapel sack suits, one single breasted, the other double breasted. The third older child, presumably their sister despite the short hair, wears a stylish dress done with a kind of fake cape.. The portrait was probably taken in the late-1890s. The portrait was taken by G. H. Wisdom, 318 Elm St., Dallas, Texas.

This cabinet portrait shows three children dressed up for a family portrait (figure 1). They are not identified, but presumably are siblings about 4-11 years old. The two boys wear standard lapel sack suits, one single breasted, the other double breasted. Here there are no age connotatiuons. Both jacket typoes were widely woirn at the time. Both boys wear knee pants suits with long sdtockings. And they wear identical lace collars and wrist cuffs. Often foir boys with such a disparity in age were dressed with some degree of age grading, but this was mot the case here. The third older child, presumably their sister despite the short hair, wears a stylish dress done with a kind of fake cape. The child certaunly looks like a boy, but sime girlks at the time did habe short hair, akthough haitr thids short is unusual. It seems unlikely that the older child woukd wear a dress unless she is a girl, especially when such a young boy has been breeched. Another poisibility is that the child in the dress is a cousin, but we think that ot is more likely that she is a girl. The portrait was probably taken in the late-1890s. Here the whicker furniture suggests the turn-of-the 20th century. The cabinet mount suggests the 1890s. So the late-90s seems likely and is consistent with the clothing. The portrait was taken by G. H. Wisdom, 318 Elm St., Dallas, Texas.
