Children's Garters: Chronology

Figure 1.--.

Garters appear to be some of the earliest stocking supportets made for children. We are not sure when they were first made. The earliest garters we see advertized are from the 1880s. We suspect that they were made earlier. We see them throughout the era that long stockings were worn, through the 1940s. During this era many more elaborate types of stocking supporters were developed such as suspender and garter wausts. Some were worn with garters. Other had garters worked into the construction of the garment. Garters were sold separately as well as long as long stockings were worn. We also note garters for kneesocks when they began to become popular.

The 1880s

Garters appear to be some of the earliest stocking supportets made for children. We are not sure when they were first made. The earliest garters we see advertized are from the 1880s. We notice Stein's individual hose supporters (plus waists)in 1885.

The 1890s

We do not have any ads from the 1890s, but this presumably reflects our limited archive of ads and catalogs from this early period.

The 1900s

The 1910s

We notice quite a number of garters advertized in the 1910s. We notice HIckory Garters stationery. It is undated, but we would guess was printed about 1910. We notice two Velvet Grip Hose Supporter advertisemnts in 1911. Ome was in the Youth's Companion. The other was in another issue of the same magazine. We note another Velt Grip ad in 1913. We note Stuart's Hose Supporters in 1915. We notice Hickory Garters in 1916.

The 1920s

We notice ads for garters throughout the 1920s, although they are featured less prominently than the various types of waists. We nore Boston Garters (for boys wearing long trousers) in 1926. We notice Butler Hose Supporters in 1929. There is another URL which I can't seem to locate showing Hickory GArters. You used this image on one of our category page, I think. It came from the 1920s, I believe. The picture was cropped because it had been used as backing for a picture. I will add it to the list when I find it.

The 1930s

We continue to note Hickoy Garters in the 1930s. Here we have a Hickory Garter. Garters were offered in the major catalogs. We note a Ward's 1936 catalog offering garter's for kneesocks. We note Sears offered Pin-On Garters (including Velvet Grip) in the Sears 1939 catalog.

The 1940s

Garters for children's hosiery can be still be found in the early 40s, but much less commonly in the late 40s. We note Sear's Pin-On Garters in 1940. We continue to note Pin-On Garters in other Sears catalogs during the early 40s.
