German Fire Brigades: Youth Auxillery (Jugendfeuerwehr) Chronology--21st Century

A German reader tells us that these groups still exist in Germany and are quite popular with some boys. We even note a few girls have joined. One report indicates that in Germany during the early 2000s that there were 251,557 youths in 16,670 youth firebrigades. They can start to train for emergencys at the age of 12. The program is seen as a way of developing future firefighters. The uniforms of todays youth groups are less ceremonial and more practical to protect the owner of accidents and hazards.

The Jugendfeuerwehr Reken (JDF) in 2004 reports "In Deutschland sind 251.557 Jugendliche in 16.670 Jugendfeuerwehren aktiv. Ein sinnvolles und spannendes Hobby, bei dem der praktische Umgang mit den Geräten der Feuerwehr nur eine kleiner Teil der Freizeitgestaltung ist. Wie schließt man einen Schlauch an, was ist ein Strahlrohr, was kann man mit Leitern und Leinen machen. Die Jugendfeuerwehr ist zwar kein Sportverein, aber trotzdem gehört auch Sport genauso zum Programm, wie die erste Hilfe oder Umweltschutzaktionen. Brettspiele im Winter, Rallyes im Sommer, Action und Gaudi stehen im Vordergrund. Und mit anderen zusammen was zu unternehmen macht auf alle Fälle viel mehr Spaß, als den ganzen Tag alleine vor dem Fernseher oder Computer zu sitzen.

Im Oktober des Jahres 2002 startet auch die Jugendfeuerwehr der Gemeinde Reken. Kinder ab 12 Jahren können dort mitmachen. Damit sich interessierte Familien über die Mitgliedschaft und die Aktivitäten informieren konnten, fand am 19.6.02 um 18:00 Uhr im Feuerwehr-Gerätehaus Groß Reken ein Infoabend statt, zu dem die Feuerwehr Reken herzlich einlud. Michael Schreiber vom Fachbereich Jugend und Famlie des Kreises Borken, der stellvertredende Kreisjugendfeuerwehrwart Michael Bonnes, der Wehrführer Ulrich Dehling, die Jugendfeuerwehrwarte der Feuerwehr Reken, sowie ein Vertreter der Gemeinde Reken waren anwesend, um Eltern und Jugendlichen Rede und Antwort zu stehen. Interessierte Kinder und Jugendliche, die den Termin verpasst haben, können sich an jedem Montagabend um 19:30 Uhr am Gerätehaus in Groß Reken melden."

The youth fire-brigade Reken (JDF) in 2004 report "In Germany there are 251,557 young people active in 16,670 youth fire-brigades. A meaningful and exciting hobby, with which practical handling the devices of the fire-brigade is only small part of the leisure activities.
