Unknown HJ Boy's Album: Individual--Rudolf Hanig

Figure 1.--We do not know the name of this Hitler Youth boy. We believe that he was from central Germany. We know that he and his fellow HJ Troop members lived some distance from the Sea (meaning northern Grmany. So the boys probably came from central Germany. While we are not positive, we believe his nane was Rudolf Hanig and the Troop may have been from Thüringen. Note how he has posed homself to resemble a HJ poster. Put your cursor on the image to see a second photograph of Rudolf. The second photograph is the only one in the album that shows a boy wearing a HJ cap.

We do not know the name of this Hitler Youth boy. This is a guess we are making from one of the album pages showing a self portrait. The paged is headlined with "THÜRINGEN". Many of the pages are headlined with the location. As this page is about Rudolf and there is no photographs of local attractions, we belief that Rudolf is the photographerc and that hre lived in Thüringen. The caption rather ignimatically read read, "laut Kl.H. He himself." This would translate as "according to Kl.H. he himself." Then there is the name Rudolf Hanig. As this is the only boy identifiedby by name, the logical conclusion is that he is the photographer. Curiously, pat of the caption is in English. This is the only foreign-language caption in the album. TheGerman reader helping with the captions comments, "I think that this young man is the photographer. Interesting that he writes something in English. The German word ' laut ' means here "according to". It also means 'loud/noisy'." While we are not absolutely sure about the boy's name, he has left us a record of HJ experiences in a photographic album he left us. We assume he took them and thus is not in many of the photograhs. The quality of the photographs suggest that he is an older teenager and a rather talented photographer. The phtographs he has put together are a valuable historical document because they are not propaganda images like so msany HJ images, but the experience of one boy and his Troop mates.
