Russian Caravelle / Carabela Youth Organization: Activities

Figure 1.-- Fencing is an important part of the program of the modern Carabela program. Notice the sea scene with presumably a caravelle. Also note the drummer pictured in the painting. Could he represent a ship's boy?

We have very little information about Caravelle / Carabela activites. We have some information from available photographs. Given the naval ethos you would think that sailing an boating might be important. That might have been an important activity when they were part of the Pioneer organization which had alarge summer camp program. We do not know if it is still important. We see a huge naval portrait in the room where one Carabela group meets (figure 1). We do know that fencing is very important at least with the modern organization. We are not sure hw important it was with the early group. . We note the children stageing fencing competitions. We are not sure what that has to do with the groups naval ethos. It does seem to relate to the historical period when caravelles were important ships. We note there are musical units at group meetings. We notice drummers adding a little musical accompnyment.

Musical Units

We note there are musical units at group meetings. We notice drummers adding a little musical accompnyment. The drummers gave rolls when the winning fencers were awardef prizes. This may be a heritage from the old Pioneer movement tht had drum and buggle corps.

Summer Camp

We note that the Caravelle boys during the Soviet era attended summer camp. We are not sure just what the summer camp program consisted of. We would giuess tht given the naval ethos that boating as an important part of the progrm, but we have no actual information.
