Liechtenstein Boy Scout Uniforms

Figure 1.--

The Boy Scouts in Liechtenstein were founded in 1931 at Schaan. The Girl Guides were founded in 1932. The Scout association was accepted by the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM) in 1933. The Girl Guides were accepted much later by World Association of Girl Guides and Girl scouts (WAGGGS) in 1952. I am not sure what happened in Liechtenstein during World War II. Historically Liechtenstein was closely associated with Austria, but the economic problems following World War I caused Liechtenstein to negotiate a customs and monetary union with Switzerland. I am not sure what occurred during the 1930s and if the Hitler Youth operated and how Scoting fared. Liechtenstein managed to remain neutral during World War II, perhaps because of their association with Switzerland. After the War, cout Rangers and Rovers worked in refugee camps. The 1953 World Scout Conference was held in Vaduz. A Scout and Guide first-aid group was founded in 1973. A Scout and Guide shop was opened in 1976 and 79. The Scouts began publishing a magazine for leaders, Knoten. The Scouts and Guides cooperated in many activities and in 1981 joint celebrated the annoversary of 50 years of Scouting.

The Scots and Guides merged in 1989 and the organization is now called Pfadfinder und Pfadfinderinnen. HSH Prince Nikolaus and his sister HSH Princess Nora are honorry members.

Activities

Major events in Liechtenstein Scouting are both summer, fall, and winter camps.

Membership

There are about 820 members in 2002, somewhat more boys than girls.

Associations

The Main Liechtensteion Scout association are the Pfadfinder und Pfadfinderinnen which is recognized by the WOSM. There is a second association active in Lichtenstein, the Pfadfindergruppe Maria Enzersdorf/Liechtenstein. They are a member of the Pfadfinder und Pfadfinderinnen Österreichs [Scouts and Guides of Austria]. I wonder what may underlie these differences. Liechtenstein is a country with some 15.000 inhabitants in six villages, measuring approx. 15 by 6 kilometers. There cannot be more than just a few Scout troops, yet they belong to two different umbrella organizations.

Levels

The Pfadfinder und Pfadfinderinnen have four levls of Scoting: Cubs/Brownies (7-11 years), Boy Scouts.Girl Guides (11-15 years), Pioneers (15-18 years, and Roivers (18 years and older). The Pfadfindergruppe Maria Enzersdorf/Liechtenstein call their 10 to 13 year olds "Späher"and their 13 - 16 year old's "Explorer" as indeed do the Scouts in Austria.

Uniforms

All Liechtenstein Scouts and Guides now wear the same unifor, The Brownies and Cubs have a yellow carfe. Others wear a red scrfe. Yellow and red are the national colors.
