German Scout Uniforms

A wide variety of uniforms have been worn by the various German Scouts. In the early years from the 1910s until they were banned by the NAZIs, the German Scouts wore a short pants uniform similar to British Scouts. After the war, German Scouts were restablished and the many different associations adopted a wide variety of uniforms, all with short pants. As German boys began to less commonly wear shorts, the attention to Scout uniforms tended to decline, especilly in the 1970s. Currently Scouts can often be found wearing Scout shirts with badges with jeans or other non-uniform long pants.

Early Era (1900s-20s)

A wide variety of uniforms have been worn by the various German Scouts. In the early years from the 1910s through the erarly 1930s, the German Scouts wore a short pants uniform similar to British Scouts, including the traditional Smokey Bear hat. The style appears to have been quite similar with long shorts. The colors appear to have been different, but HBU does not have details at this time.

NAZI Era

The German Scout movement was abolished by the NAZIs and the membership adsorbed into the Hitler Youth movement soon after the NAZIs seized power. Thus there were no Scout uniforms during the NAZI era.

Post War Era (1945-69)

After the war, German Scouts were restablished and the many different associations adopted a wide variety of uniforms, all with short pants. Many boys appear to have worn lederhosen with their Scout shirts.

Late 20th Century (1970-1999)

As German boys began to less commonly wear shorts, the attention to Scout uniforms tended to decline, especilly in the 1970s. Scouts began wearing their Scout shirts showing their badges with non-uniform pants, jeans and cutt-off shorts were particularly popular choices.
