Unknown HJ Boy's Album: Individual Photographs

Figure 1.-- One of the few other individual photographs is this older HJ boy. The young man with glasses is identified only as "Der Schnelle" (the fast one). Why? I have no idea. It's possible that members of the troop had nicknames.

One curious aspect of this album is the rarity of individual photographs and the total absence of chummy group photos. Most personal HJ snapshots show pictures of the boy or his close friends standing together for photographs. The photographs in this album are almost like photographs a journalist would have taken depicting a HJ troop's activities. Part of this seems to be that the boy was a gifted photographer and didn't want a bunch of trite snapshots. But it does seem to be a bit strange that he didn't take a few photographs of his chums standing together. There may be a few self photographs. One is the only stifly posed snapshot in the album. There are no photographs of the boy with his family. One of the few individual photograph is an older HJ boy seen here (figure 1). The young man with glasses is identified only as "Der Schnelle" (the fast one). Why? I have no idea. It's possible that members of the troop had nicknames. He we assume was a HJ leader, probably about to finish his term in the HJ. The only other individual photogrph was captioned, "Theo der Stille", meaning "Theo the quiet one". Theo was photographed during the Troop's visit to Hamburg.

Self Portraits

There may be a few self photographs. We are not positive, but we think this is the boy who took the photographs. One is the only stifly posed snapshot in the album. There are no photographs of the boy with his family.

Der Schnelle

One of the few individual photograph is an older HJ boy seen here (figure 1). The young man with glasses is identified only as "Der Schnelle" (the fast one). Why? I have no idea. It's possible that members of the troop had nicknames. He we assume was a HJ leader, probably about to finish his term in the HJ.

Der Stille

The only other individual photogrph was captioned, "Theo der Stille", meaning "Theo the quiet one". This was presumably another nickname. Theo is a younger teenager photographed during the Troop's visit to Hamburg. We can see Hamburg harbor in the background. Note that he wears his HJ pin on his shirt because for some reason this troop did not commonly wear caps.
