Unknown HJ Boy's Album: Experiences--Outings

Figure 1.-- Here some of the HJ boys are having a good time with some kinf of bicycle event. I'm not entirely what is going n, but there are not subber tires on the boy's bike. The older boys seem to be carrying him and his bike. The caption read, "Der Sieger! ????!" This meant, "The winner!" With some kind of an exclamation added.

We also see HJ boys in this album on several outings. There were bikeing and skiing trips. Surely there much have been hiking expeditions. You would think they would be the mot common. In our HJ boy;s album, however, we mostly see the boys on biking expeditions. Not every German boy had a bike in the 1930s. These would have been mostly middle-class boys. Most working-class boys would not have had a bike. Actually many workers used bikes to go to work. The HJ was a mass movement which eventually involved almost all German boys. Thus I'm not entirely sure where the bikes came from. We also see a skiing outing. Skiing was not something every German boy did. But it was something that some working-class boys might have an opportunity to do because of theHJ. We would guess that the skiiing equipment probably belong to the HJ, but we have not details on this.

Hiking

We also see HJ boys in this album on several outings. There were bikeing and skiing trips. Surely there much have been hiking expeditions. You would think they would be the most common. Yet we do not see what look like formal hiking outings pictured in the album. We do note an image of some boys on what looks like an informal ramble, probably while camping.

Biking

In our HJ boy;s album, however, we mostly see the boys on biking expeditions. Not every German boy had a bike in the 1930s. These would have been mostly middle-class boys. Most working-class boys would not have had a bike. Actually many workers used bikes to go to work. Few workers could aford cars. The HJ was a mass movement which eventually involved almost all German boys. Thus I'm not entirely sure where the bikes came from. We at first thought these would be trips out into the local countryside. Some of the biking trips seem, however, to be trips to various parts of Germany and would have been substantial trips. We see some biking images with just the boys and the bikes. In other instances the bikes are heavily loaded. They involve stays in hodstels and camping. This would have mean that many of the younger boys probably would not have been involved as long troups would have been to arduous.

Skiing

We also see a skiing outing. Skiing was not something every German boy did. But it was something that some working-class boys might have an opportunity to do because of the HJ. We would guess that the skiiing equipment probably belong to the HJ, but we have not details on this. I am not sure just how common skiing outings would have been for Germany boys. They may have been most common in the mountaneous Alpine south where many boys would have had some basic skiing skills and skiing equipment. But we just do not know at this time.
