Canadian Scouts: Beavers

Figure 1.-- The Canadian Scouts backed off from a "one size fits all" uniforming policy and created a Beavers distintive uniform. Note the easy to put on vest, neckerchief, and floppy hat.

Beaver Scouts are the new program for very young children adopted by many national Scouting movements. Theu are designed to draw youing children into Scouting at about the time they begin school. They prepare the children for Cubbing and stress cooperation and sharing. Scouts Canasa tell parents (because many of the children are just beginning to read), "Fun and friendship is the cornerstone of the Beaver Scouts program. Beaver Scouts opens the door for your child to discover the world. It is filled with a little bit of everything – outdoor activities, games, music and sports. Along the way, Beaver Scouts meet new friends, learn cooperation and teamwork and develop self-confidence. Beaver Scouts are welcomed into a group of energetic boys and girls just like them. They will meet with kind and caring leaders that will help them with anything they need to know about being a good Scout. They will feel respected and appreciated for their own uniqueness, and encouraged to bring all they can to their group and activities." Different names are used in other countries in part because bdeavers are North American. Both America and Britain asopted the Beaver name. The British do not have beavers, but the children all know about them.

A Scotter tells us that thd rogram is based on the concepts of fun, friendship, cooperation and teamwork, and developing self-confidence. Different names are used in other countries in part because bdeavers are North American. Both America and Britain asopted the Beaver name. The British do not have beavers, but the children all know about them.

Age

Canadian Beaver Cubs is designed for boys and girls 5-7 years of age. This means Kindergarden chikdren and the first years of primary school. After this they transition into Cubdding.

Activities

Activities include outdoor likes nature walks and family camping, picnincs, games, music and play acting.

Beaver Scout Promise

The vBeaver Scout Promise is very simole, "I promise to love God and help take care of the world." Bote rthe continued involvement of religion. Baden Powell designed Scouting as a Christian movement. As Scouting spread beyond Europw, this was expanded to include other religions. In Canada, however, as in America and Briotain, churches have become thev primary bsponsoring group.

Beaver Scout Law

A Beaver has fun, works hard and helps family and friends.

Beaver Scout Motto

The Beaver Scout Motto is "Sharing, Sharing, Sharing". It is interesting that coopation and sharing are suych an important part of the program. This may be a reflectyion of modrn life styles and the home exoerience of younger children.

Uniforms

We don't have any information on any uniform other than the current uniform. The Beaver Cub uniform consists of a T-shirt, brown vest, blue neckerchief, and floppy cloth suncap. I'm not sure how much the cap is worn, and would like input from any of our readers familiar with the program.
