New Zealand Sea Scouting: Traditional Activities

Figure 1.--These Sea Scouts are being picked up after a Tramp in the mid 90s (not sure of the year at present). The scouts travel in uniform but change into activity dress for the action. One boy seems to prefer red socks to the regulation blue kneesocks.

Sea Scout troops are involved all the same traditional types of scouting activities as New Zealand land scout groups. Like Sea Scouts they participate in parades and church services. Sea Scouts are also involved in "tramps" (hiking and camping). Other activities are climbing, abseiling, motor cycling, mountain biking, etc, as well as hikes. Camping is now a means to an activity rather than an activity itself. The Sea Scouts make look a little incongrous hiking and camping in Sea Scout uniforms, rather like their boat was grounded. As a result, Sea Scouts usually travel in uniform , but but change into activity dress for the action. They enjoy the traditional land activities as much as the regular Scouts. Of course the Sea Scouts participate in the National Jamboree just as any other New Zealand Scout. As well attending Area and National regattas, sea scouts attend the National Jamboree, held every 3 years and the sea venturers attend the National Venture which is held on the year when there is not either a National Regatta or National Jamboree.

Church Parades

Like Sea Scouts they participate in parades and church services.

Tramps and Camps

An important traditional activity in land camping is of course hiking and camping. This was a major actiity in early Scouting. This is some what less true today, but still continues to be important. Sea Scouts are also involved in "tramps" (hiking and camping). Sea Scout camping included all the traditional aspects of land scouting such as thge evening camp fire with songs and skits.

Other Activities

Other activities are climbing, abseiling, motor cycling, mountain biking, etc, as well as hikes.

Jamborees

Of course the Sea Scouts participate in the National Jamboree just as any other New Zealand Scout. As well attending Area and National regattas, sea scouts attend the National Jamboree, held every 3 years and the sea venturers attend the National Venture which is held on the year when there is not either a National Regatta or National Jamboree.
