Aberdare Boys' County Grammar School: Uniform

Figure 1.--This photograph shows the boys at the Aberdare Boys Grammar School in 1962. All of the boys wear the school uniform, including the senior boys. A badge has been added to the blazer.

when the school first opened in 1896. We do have some early photograpgs, but they are undated. We do have some information on the uniform in later years. The boys seem to to be well dressed in the early years, but there does not seem to have been a uniform. we hsave no detasils on the dress code. Even in the 12940s after the war, there still does not seem to be a uniform. A black blazer uniform appears to have been introduced about 1954.

1900s

Here we see a class of younger boys. The photograph is undated, but we would guess was taken some time in the 1900s. There does not seem to be a uniform, but the boys all wore suits. The mostly look to be wearing kneepants or knickers. Several boys wear Eton collars.

1946

Here we see the school right after World war II. The boys are all smartly turned out, even though Britain still had clothes ratioining. The boys almost all wear short pants suits with kneesocks. One boys wears a sweater and another a casual rather than suit jacket. I don't think short pants were rwquired, they were just common at the time for boys this age. The boys' suits, sweaters, shorts and kneesocks don't seem to be uniform items as there are major differences.

1954

The boys in 1954 wore a wide range of jackets. There does appear to be a school blazer, but few of the older boys wear it. Even some of the junior boys are not wearing it. Many boys wear open collar shirts without ties. The uniform regulations do not appear to be enforced, but most of the junior boys are wearing the blazer. Most also wear short trousers, although the reguklation is not clear as a few wear long trousers. One boy appears to be wearing a blazer from another school.

1957

The uniform in 1957 was essentually a black blazer without a badge and grey trousers. The school did not seem to strictly enforce the uniform frule as several boys do not wear ties and at least one boy wrars an outlandish shirt. The senior boys apparently were not required to war blazers. Some boys wear a grey sweater with school trim. Many boys , however, wear non-regulation "V"-neck and crew-neck sweaters. Some of the younger boys wore short trousers and kneesocks. Not all of them wore shorts, but I am not sure what the rule was. The school had a cap with concentric circles, but virtually none of the boys appear to have it, at least in the portrait. I'm unsure what the school rule was for the cap.

1962

The uniform in 1962 was the same black blazer as in 1957, but it is now worn with a badge. A few boys wear black instead of grey trousers. The school seems to more strictly enforce the uniform than it did in 1957. Even the senior boys are now wearing the blazer. Several boys wear a black or dark blue sweater with school trim. Many boys, however, wear non-regulation grey "V"-neck sweaters. Some of the younger boys wore short trousers and kneesocks. These boys wear plain grey kneesocks as there are no school socks. Not all of them wore shorts, but I am not sure what the rule was. There was almost certainly some kind if requitement. It may have been just the first year boys. The school cap apperas to have been discontinued.

1964

The uniform in 1964 looks to be the same as in 1962. We note a few senior boys are not wearing blazers, but their own jackets. Another change is that the school no longer required the junior first year boys to wear short trousers. All of the boys are wearing long trousers in the 1964 portrait. Such a drastic change in just 2 years must have meant a rule was changed.
