Canadian Scout History (1940s)

Figure 1.-- Here we see Canadian Scouts in Montreal. They are prepafring for a trip to Vermont. One wears a little pennant from Vermont and they are standing near their bus. I assume that their Scout group just came back from a trip to Vermont, the American state just south of Québec. I am not sure if there was a Scout event in Vermont.

Canada as in World War I joined Britain again in World War II to opose the NAZIs (September 1939). The older Scouts and leaders join forces to serve in the military. Most volunteers as in World War I came from English-speaking Canada. Scouts supported the war effort in a number of ways on the home front. Support the War effort was an important Scouting activity throughout the War years. We are unsure if this varies among French-speaking Scouts. Scout founder Baden Powell died at age 84 in Kenya (1941). The Canadian General Council continued officialy as a branch of the British Boy Scout Association. We see the British flag at some Scout activities rather than the Canadian Dominion flag (red with the Union Jack in the upper left quadrabnt. We are unsure what flag French-speaking troops in Quebec used. Canadian Scouts finally became an independent member of the Boy Scout World Conference (now the World Organization of the Scout Movement) after the War (1946). A subsequent amendment to the Act of Parliament changed the name to Boy Scouts of Canada. The first Canadian National Jamboree was held in the Connaught Ranges, Ottawa (1949). The Jamboree was attended by 2,579 Scouts. The Scouts still wore the traditional lemon-squeezer hats. Note the badge on the front (figure 1). The uniform was a light colored shirt, dark short pants, and matching kneesocks. I'm not sure about the colors.

World War II

Canada as in World War I joined Britain again in World War II to opose the NAZIs (September 1939). The older Scouts and leaders join forces to serve in the military. Most volunteers as in World War I came from English-speaking Canada. Scouts supported the war effort in a number of ways on the home front. Support the War effort was an important Scouting activity throughout the War years. We are unsure if this varies among French-speaking Scouts. Scout founder Baden Powell died at age 84 in Kenya (1941).

Organization

The Canadian General Council at the beginning of the decade continued officialy as a branch of the British Boy Scout Association. When the Boy Scouts were founded in England, there was no real thought given to an international movement (1900s). And Canada at the time was a Dominion, not a fully independent country. Thus the idea of a separate Canadian Scouting movement independent of of the British Scouting movement only developed over time. We still see the British flag at some Scout activities rather than the Canadian Dominion flag (red with the Union Jack in the upper left quanrant) in Toranto during the early 1940s. We are unsure just how common this was. We do not know, for example, what flag French-speaking troops in Quebec used. Canadian Scouts finally became an independent member of the Boy Scout World Conference (now the World Organization of the Scout Movement) after the War (1946). A subsequent amendment to the Act of Parliament changed the name to Boy Scouts of Canada.

First Canadian Jamboree

The first Canadian National Jamboree was held in the Connaught Ranges, Ottawa (1949). The Jamboree was attended by 2,579 Scouts.

Uniform

The Scouts still wore the traditional lemon-squeezer hats. Note the badge on the front (figure 1). The uniform was a light colored shirt, dark short pants, and matching kneesocks. I'm not sure about the colors.
