Hong Kong Scout Garments

Figure 1.--These Hong Kong Scouts are participating in Scout Day in 2003. Note the traditional green and yellow British-style Cub cap which is still part of the Cub uniform. The boys in the back row look to be Scouts. Note the similarity of the uniform, except for the caps and the fact that the Cubs wear their caps, but the Scouts do not wear their berets.

Some information is available on the uniforms worn by Hong Kong Scouts. Hong Kong Scouts still place a great emphasis on the uniform. Many Scout associations around the world have made major uniform changes in the Scout uniform during the 1980s and 90s. The Hong Kong uniform, however, remains little changed. Cubs continue to wear the traditional peaked cap, one of a dwindling numbers of national Scout groups which countinue to use the traditional cap. Scouts wear a beret. The kneckerchief is worn by all Scout groups and is a group identifier. Short pants an kneesocks are still widely worn by Cubs and Scouts. Many other associations in particular dropped kneesocks in the 1990s.

Emphasis

Some information is available on the uniforms worn by Hong Kong Scouts. Hong Kong Scouts still place a great emphasis on the uniform. Garments

We have some information on the various garments worn by Hong Kong Scouts.

Headwear

Cubs continue to wear the traditional peaked cap, one of a dwindling numbers of national Scout groups which countinue to use the traditional cap. They are green with yellow piping, just like the original English Cub caps. Girl cubs have a different styled cap. Scouts wear a beret which is more common around the world. We notice that Cubs commonly wer their caps, bit in many photographs the couts ar not wearing their berets.

Neckerchief/scarve

The kneckerchief is worn by all Scout groups and is a group identifier. We are not sure just when Hong Kong Scouts began wearing neckerchiefs as group identifiers. Each of the differet Hing Kong scout Groups have their own destinctive neckerchief. All the different level Scouts in a given group wear the same neckerchief. We note a range of different colors. Most seem to be solid colors. The Cubs here wear purple neckerchiefs. We note a Catholic group with white and yellow neckerchiefs. One group has a purple neckerchief with red and yellow stripes.

Jackets

We notice some Scouts wearing blue jackets for activities on cool days.

Sweaters

We notice sme scouts wearing brown ribbed sweaters. Other images show more of a greenish colored sweater.

Shirts

All the different level of Scouts wear the same tan shirts. The boys sew their various badges on these shirts. Note the badges the Cubs here are wearing (figure 1). We are not sure yet just what they represent.

Pants

The Cubs and Scouts wear the same green short pants. There may be some difference here. all the Cubs appear to wear short pants. The Scouts mostly wears short pants, but we have seen some wearing long pants as well. Some Groups appear to be more flexible than others. Most photographs we have noted show the bous wearing shorts, but we do not know the precise uniform rules. We are unsure if there are any activity or seasonal patterns involved here. The Venture Scouts wear long pants. There also appears to be differences n color. Some boys wear light green shorts while ohers wear bright green shorts.

Skirts

Hong Kong Scouting is coeducational. The girks involved in Cubbing and Scouting wear essential the same uniform as the boys, only the girls wear skirts rather than pants.

Kneesocks

Kneesocks are required ith the Scout uniform. Cubs and Scouts both wear dark green kneesocks. Grasshoppers may wear whitekneesocks. All of the boys and girls wearing shorts and skirts wear kneesocks. Many other associations in particular dropped kneesocks in the 1990s.

Shoes

We not boys wearing black leather shoes, often carefully polishd.
