Hong Kong Boy Scout Uniforms: Scouting Levels

Figure 1.--The Hong Kong Cubs still wear the traditiional Cub cap.

Many of the different Scout levels have distinctive uniforms. The two principal groups are Cubs and Scouts. There are also other grouos like Grasshoppers, Air Scouts, Sea Scouts, Ventures, and Rovers. The different age levels, however, have quite similar uniforms. The Grasshoppers, Cubs, and Scouts wear similar uniforms. The difference is not as sharp as with some other national Scouting movements. The major difference Hong Kong is the head gear. The tradition Cub peaked cap is instantly recognizable. They all strongly show the British influence on Hong Kong Scout uniforms as it does on the overall Scouting program.

Grasshopper Scouts

I have little information on Grasshopper uniforms. I think they are quite similar to the cub uniforms. Available images suggest that the only difference is the neckerchief. Hong Kong Scouts seem to use the neckerchief as an indication of Scouying level rather than a group identifier. The Grasshoppers may also wear white raher than dark green kneesocks. We need aditiional information, however, to confirm this. They are comparable to American Tiger Cubs.

Cub Scouts

The Hong Kong Cubs continue to wear the traditional English green peaked Cub cap with yellow piping. Hong Kong Cubs at the end of the 20th century were one of the few Scout associations to continue wearing the traditional Cub cap. The shirt is a light beige tan worn with olive short pants and dark green kneesocks. Girls are allowed to participate in Hong Kong Cubs. This is a policy that is highly variable around te world. They wear a similar uniform to the boys, but with a different cap, culottes rather than short pants, and destinctive white kneesocks. Some images suggests that at least some of the girls in Cub units opt for the dark kneesocks like the boys wear.

Figure 2.--The Hong Kong Scout uniform is similar to the Cub uniform.

Scouts

Hong Kong Scouts wear very similar uniforms to the Cubs. This is similar to a trend which began in several countries during the 1990s to reduce age differences in Scouting uniforms. The major difference in the Hong Kong uniforms is the dark green berets the Scouts wear. The rest of the uniform lokks just like the Cubs: light-colored beige shirts, olive short pants, and dark green kneesocks. The girls wear the same uniform, except skirts instead of shorts.

Venture Scouts

I have no information on Venture uniforms. It is of course the uniform for older Scouts, but we do not yet have any information.

Rover Scouts

I have no information on Rover uniforms. It is of course the uniform for oldest Scouts, but we do not yet have any information. Rovers woul be comparable to American Explorer Scouts.

Figure 3.--The Hong Kong Air Scout uniform has a blue theme.

Air Scouts

Air Scouts uniforms have a basically blue theme as opposed o the green Scout uniforms. The uniform style is virtually identical to the Scout uniform, except the color. Air Scouts wear dark blue berets, light blue shirts, dark blue short pants, and dark blue kneesocks.

Sea Scouts

There are two Sea Scout groups in Hong Kong. Hong Kong Sea Scouts like other Sea Scouts arpund the world have a sailor-style uniform rather than a unoiform like regular Scouts. Sea Scouts uniforms have a basically white theme as opposed to the green Scout uniforms. The Sea Scout uniform is the most destinctive of the various Hong Kong Scout uniforms. The boys wear a sailor cap and square collared middy blouse with blue short pants.
