Portuguese Boy Scout Movement

Figure 1.--Here we see a patrol of Portuguese Scouts. These Scouts belong to the Associação dos Escoteiros de Portugal (AEP).

The only uniformed group we know of that is currently active at his time in Portugal is the Scouts. The Scouts are known as the Grupo Escoteiros de Portugal. Strangely the Portuguese colony of Macau off China was the home for the first Portuguese Boy Scout Group. The group was founded in 1911. The Macau Scout Leaders came back to Portugal and founded the Associação de Escoteiros de Portugal (Boy Scouts Association of Portugal) in 1913. We believe Portugal had a relatively small Scout movement, in part because Portugal was such a poor country during the era that Scouting was especially popular in Europe. As in much of Europe there appears to be more than one Scouting association in Portugal. There is for, example, as separate Catholic Scouting association.

Chronology

The only uniformed group we know of that is currently active at his time in Portugal is the Scouts. The Scouts are known as the Grupo Escoteiros de Portugal. Strangely the Portuguese colony of Macau off China was the home for the first Portuguese Boy Scout Group. The group was founded in 1911. The Macau Scout Leaders came back to Portugal and founded the Associação de Escoteiros de Portugal (Boy Scouts Association of Portugal) in 1913. We are unsure what happened to Portuguese Scouting during the Fascist era beginning in the 1930s.

Importance

We believe Portugal had a relatively small Scout movement, in part because Portugal was such a poor country during the era that Scouting was especially popular in Europe.

Associations

As in much of Europe there appears to be more than one Scouting association in Portugal. There is for, example, as separate Catholic Scouting association. Portuguese Scouting according to one surce was founded in 1911, another source suggests 1913. Many scout associations appeared. However, only two of them were born to last. Portugal Currently has two primary Scout associations.

União dos Adueiros de Portugal

The União dos Adueiros de Portugal was an early Portuguese Scout association. We have not details about the association at this time. The group was closed in 1930.

Associação dos Escoteiros de Portugal (AEP)

The Association of Portuguese Scouts (Associação dos Escoteiros de Portugal--AEP) we believe was founded in 1913. We have little nformation about the AEP at this time, but it does appear to be the the principal Portuguese Scout Association. One report indicated that Portuguese Cubs in the 1990s wore yellow shirts and kerchiefs, usuallybwith long pants.

Corpo Nacional de Escutas (CNE)

Portugal as is the case in most European countries has a separate Catholic Scout asociation. Since the early ages of scouting, the Catholic Church has seen it as a superb means of working with children. Catholic scouting began in 1922 when a Portuguese prelate, impressed with Italian Catholic Scouts decided to intoduce the program to Portugal and founded the Corpo Nacional de Escutas (CNE). The name was changed later. The CNE grew rapidly.
