Figure 1.-- Here we see the Chillingham Public School in 1907 only a few years after the schoolwas founded. The girls wear dresses and pinafores. The boys wear a variety of outfits, including sailor suits and Fauntleroy suits.

We have found a number of images taken at the school over the years since it was founded. Images are availanle for the century in which the school has operated. The images provide a fascinating look as school fashions over time.

The 1900s

Here we see the Chillingham Public School in 1907 only a few years after the schoolwas founded. The girls wear dresses and pinafores. The boys wear a variety of outfits, including sailor suits and Fauntleroy suits. Sailor suits and middy blouses seem to have been especially popular. A few boys wear suits with Eton collars.

The 1930s

We are not sure when the school was foiunded. The first images of the school; we have date from the 1930s. The boys all seemed to be dressed up with white shirts. Many boys wear ties, bith neckties and bowties. We suspect that the children were instructed to dress up for a school portrait. We do not know for sure, byt suspect thsat the boys did not normally dress so well. The boys wear short pants. Some wear kneesocks. Many boys are barefoot. Note that even thiugh the children dressed up for the portrait, several still came barefoot.

The 1940s

We see another image of the school, this time in 1948. The school seems to have grown substsantislly. There look to be about twice the number of children. The photograph was taken on a sunny day. Some of the children have sun caps. There is still no uniform. For some reason it was felt necessary to build a huge back drop for the portrait. The boys all look to be wearing short pants. Somer of the children wear sudspernder pants and skirts. Most of the children are barefoot.

The 1950s

Here we see the school in 1958. The children are dressed very cassually. The boys are wearing "T"-shirts ans shorts. All of the children look to be barefoot. The backdrop used in 1948 is gone and we can see some of the town. The "T"-dhirts look rather like shirts Americasn boys might have worn, although American boys would have worn jeans in the 1950s. The girls seem to mostly be wearing dresses.

The 1960s

Here we see the school in 1960. This time the portrait was taken during cool weather. One boy looks chilly. They wear lonhg sleeve shirts. Severasl boy have jackets on. Even so it can be that cold as the boys are all wearing short pants. The girls wear dresses. Most of the children are barefoot. One girl wears school sandals.
